Post-Master’s Nurse Educator Certificate

You must enroll in and complete each course in the published certificate curriculum plan.  Our accredited certificate option does not allow for a la carte coursework and all courses must be taken to receive the certificate, including the practicum courses.  

Students may transfer a maximum of 6 semester credit hours into the certificate option as per college policy published in the student catalog, thereby reducing the number of courses required.

Yes. All students enrolled in our certificate option must complete the practicum courses as published in the curriculum plan. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to learn new pedagogical skills or teach at a different level of nursing education than their current role.  Students who are already teaching are not permitted to conduct their practicum experiences in the same level of nursing education that they work in.  For example, someone teaching in an LPN/LVN program would be required to find a preceptor in an ADN or BSN program.

No. Students must successfully complete the required hours for each practicum course. Work in the practicum must be in a different degree program level than the student’s current role.

It depends on the graduate coursework you have previously completed. If you have taken advanced pharmacology, advanced physical assessment, and advanced pathophysiology (“the 3 Ps”), you may elect to submit evidence of successful completion of those courses (transcript and course syllabus) for review of possible transfer credit.  Course transfer requests will be subject to the college transfer credit policy published in the Student Catalog. If you have never taken the 3 Ps in a previous graduate program, then you are required to take NSG 5400 and NSG 5450.

No.  Our certificate option is designed as a post-master’s option for those who currently hold a master’s degree.  Those who hold a bachelor’s degree should enroll in the MSN Nurse Educator degree option.

Graduates of the certificate option should include their earned certificate within the education section of their resume/CV just as the earned degrees are listed.  Typically, this is included after the highest degree earned in chronological order.  It is important to note that this should be listed as a “certificate” and not a “certification” as the two are distinctly unique.

In order to gain practical experience, students will be required to complete a teaching practicum. This experience requires students to spend 135 hours working with a preceptor in an academic or healthcare setting over two (2) eight-week terms. See the Student Catalog for more information.

Galen’s requirements for practicum experiences are similar to those you will encounter in your professional nursing career. Students must comply with the practicum sites’ expectations including but not limited to background screening, immunization, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training requirements.
